Graded Offerings

Band I
Students in Beginning Band do not have to have any previous musical experience. Students will be taught how to play a band instrument in private and/or group lessons once per cycle. Students in band receive a Pass/Fail grade for their
participation.

Band II
Students in Advanced Band have had previous musical experience with the instrument. Students will perform in concert venues, as well as in competitions, including All-State Band, and festivals throughout the year. Some of the playing opportunities are outside of the scheduled school day. Arrangements are coordinated through the school, giving consideration to the students’ whole academic program. Advanced Band meets two times per cycle during the school day with other practices scheduled after school. Students in band receive a Pass/Fail grade for their participation.

Chorus
Students interested in vocal performance may enroll in Chorus or be invited by the Director. Students identify vocal ability, learn music reading skills through making music together, and perform in concerts. Qualified students may audition for Delaware Junior High All State Chorus. Class meets twice per cycle with pre-performance after school rehearsals in December and May. Performance at concerts is required for grade. Students in chorus receive a Pass/Fail grade and effort grade for their participation.

The Academy Singers - Choir
The Academy Singers is an honor choir and represent the school in the community. Students are invited by the Director to become a member after vocal assessment. This ensemble presents its own repertoire and performs with the Chorus. Members of the Academy Singers participate in concerts, Mass, Delaware Junior High All-State (if qualified), as well as other performance opportunities throughout the school year. Some of these performances are outside of the scheduled school day. Choir meets twice per cycle and twice per month in the fall as well as pre-performance rehearsals in December and May. Performance at school concerts is required for grade. Students receive a Pass/Fail grade and an effort grade for their participation.

Students will learn about the aspects of creating a school yearbook, including cataloging and organizing photos and information. Students should have strong graphic design, writing and computer skills. Students in Yearbook receive a Pass/Fail grade for their participation.

8th Grade Test Preparation for High School Entrance Exams
The intent of the class is to prepare students to take standardized tests as effectively as possible. Personal goal-setting and an honest self-assessment of strengths and weaknesses by each student are important and critical to the impact of this course. The class is Pass/Fail.
Course content includes:
- Strategies for answering multiple choice questions
- Pacing and speed
- Dealing with emotional aspects of test-taking

Non-Graded Offerings

Advanced Study in Art (Grades 5 & 7)
Students will create projects in a variety of mediums as they enhance and expand artistic skills and talents developed in the formal art curriculum. Enrichment classes may embark on group projects or students may work individually. Students who have a strong background in art are best suited for this program.

Competition Math (Grades 4 - 5)
Students work on contest math problems, sharing strategies and solutions. Students will participate in a national math contest during this activity. Problem solving activities, puzzles, and math games will also be included.

Math Olympiad (Grade 6)
Math Olympiad is an interschool competition which is held five times during the school year at monthly intervals beginning in November. Each contains five problems with specified time limits. The value of the Olympiad problems is related to their special appeal to reasoning, creativity, resourcefulness, ingenuity and important principals of mathematics.

Competition Math (Grades 7 - 8)
Students work on challenging contest type problems sharing strategies and solutions. Students will practice for Math League and MATHCOUNTS competitions during this period. These competitions take place after school hours and at various locations. Students interested in Math League should sign up for this activity.

Grammar Skills (Grades 5 - 6)
Students needing reinforcement in English grammar are recommended by the English department faculty for this class. The specific curriculum will vary depending upon the needs of the individual students.
Students are signed-up for this class at the start of each trimester at the request of the English department faculty in consultation with parents.

Environmental Science (Grades 7 - 8)
Students will be involved in a variety of outdoor activities relating to the environment, including the study and identification of native plants, steam study and sampling, and aquarium set-up. Appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear is required.

Students will learn the basics of starting plants from seeds, bulbs and cuttings. They will be introduced to plant identification techniques and be involved in labeling plants on the school property. Appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear is required.

Speech (Grades 4 - 8)
Students learn about the various forms and purposes of public speaking, including persuasive and informative declamation and original oratory, as well as oral interpretation of poetry and prose. Students will have the opportunity to speak before the group on a regular basis. Students will have the opportunity to compete in a number of speech tournaments throughout the year, including the Saint Edmond’s Invitational Tournament, sponsored by SEDAC each year.

Students will focus on spelling and expanding their vocabulary. Students will rehearse the “spelling bee” format in preparing for the spelling bee competition.

Model UN (Grades 6 - 8)
Students explore the different cultures and countries of the world, gathering information and insight through research and reading. Students assemble and synthesize the information in preparation for an annual Model UN competition, with teams competing from schools around the state. Students from this class are selected to represent the Academy.

Spanish Club (Grades 4 - 8)
Students will engage in activities and games, view videos, sample cuisine, and discuss current events and traditions about the cultures of Spanish-speaking nations.

Spanish Study Club (Grades 6 - 8)
Students review grammatical concepts, verb conjugations and vocabulary. Reinforcement exercises are completed and listening skills are practiced. Quizzes and tests are reviewed for understanding of concepts and errors. The Study Club also features student teachers who help their peers with concepts they have already mastered.

Independent Study (Grades 4 - 8)
Students will meet in small groups (15 students or less) with faculty members for private, independent study. The study time is quiet time, supervised by the faculty member.
During this time, students will be able to:
- Begin homework (not homework due that day) both written work and study
- Obtain help from a faculty member
- Work/conduct research in the Library or Computer Center
