FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL
Dear SEA Families,
It's no secret that I love basketball. I now think I might talk about it a bit too much since I received more than a few Duke basketball-themed birthday cards this year from students. But it was an article I read last night about Texas Tech basketball team that I want to highlight. Texas Tech, for my non-basketball fans, made it to the NCAA finals. But during their season they went through a slight losing streak, and the captain of the team, Norense Odiase, decided to make a change. He banned all smartphones after 11pm for all players! Phones were collected from every player and kept in the team manager’s room for the night.

Since that change, Texas Tech started winning games on the road. The players admit how difficult it was at first, how they thought it was a not going to make a difference, how they thought it wasn’t fair. In the end though they learned that shutting off the technology does make an impact on their daily lives. As Odiase says in the article: “Your phone will always be there, your friends will always be there, notifications, all that stuff, will always be there in the morning,” he says. “Just get some rest.”

Parents, I support you when you want to ban smartphones. I have asked for all smartphones to stay home. There truly is no reason for students in middle school to have their cell phone. They have teachers, coaches, and adults around them at all time. Please be reminded that we have banned smartphones on the upcoming Ashland Nature and Camp Tockwogh overnight trips.

Yes-when you limit device time/usage, kids will kick and scream, but in the end, they may just thank you. And if they don't, then share this story with them. Maybe some elite basketball player wisdom will do the trick.

Fondly, Tricia

SUMMER THEATER OFFERINGS ON CAMPUS
While it is a great time to be thinking about our summer offerings in theatre, musical theatre, and writing for the stage for our Middle and Upper Form students, let's not forget our youngest stars in the making. SNEAKERS is an introduction to musical theatre for boys and girls aged 6-8. Theatreworks, Jr. is a mini-play produced in five days for ages 7-9. No prior experience is required for either of these programs. Click here for info about all programs. Our theatre offerings provide a great opportunity for students to learn communication skills and develop self-confidence. Contact Ms. DeHart with questions.

SALLIES/NATIVITY PREP LAX FUNDRAISER
Please consider supporting SEA alumni and friends who are working hard to establish a lacrosse program at Nativity Prep. Most of these students have had no exposure to the wonderful sport of lacrosse and are really enjoying the experience. These Salesianum students have been helping the Nativity boys develop lax skills for this entire school year. The time has come to raise funds for their gear so that they can begin competing. Please donate to this great cause if you can! Click here to view their page.
